About Stanford

Officially known as Leland Stanford Junior University, the Stanford University (Stanford) was founded in 1885 by California Senator Leland Stanford and his wife Jane, in memory of their only child Leland Jr., who died of typhoid fever at the age of 15. It was established to “promote the public welfare by exercising an influence in behalf of humanity and civilization.” Stanford admitted its first students in October 1891, as a co-educational and non-denominational institution.

Standing on an 8,180-acre Palo Alto stock farm, the university houses around seven schools, over 90 graduate fields of study, 2,219 faculty members and 16,424 students on its campus. Stanford is known for its academic achievements and ranks as one of the top universities in the world.

It offers its students, boundless opportunities to pursue their passions and collaborate on solving complex global problems. The university encourages students not only to develop but also to commercialise their ideas. By the end of 2019, the university had produced 83 Nobel laureates in addition to many innovators and entrepreneurs. Stanford is particularly noted for being one of the most successful institutions in attracting funding for entrepreneurial ventures.
